Bio

Bio - Nana D. Kufuor - Audio EngineerRaised by Ghanaian immigrants, Nana D. Kufuor grew up on five US Army bases in Germany. Her foray into music began in her father’s home studio as a toddler, where she was immersed in the music of jazz geniuses Herbie Hancock and Miles Davis, among others. Her father’s love for a vast array of musical genres and styles rubbed off on Nana. As she matured her musical tastes expanded to include classic highlife, jazz, hip hop, reggae, soul, R&B, various styles of rock and electronic music, and the innovative pop hybrids of Madonna, Prince, Michael Jackson, Phil Collins, George Michael, The Police, INXS and many others.  In junior high, Nana took up the trumpet but soon developed a love for the trombone, playing in school bands for seven years. At the University of Pennsylvania, she was introduced to music theory and learned to play the dundun drum with African Rhythms, the school’s hallmark drumming and dance troupe.

Nana starts her music production career at age 3 in Baumholder, Germany.

During a brief hiatus from university, Nana moved to the Washington, DC area, where she later received a bachelor’s degree in international relations from George Mason University. Shortly thereafter, she worked as an online marketing analyst and dissertation research coordinator for an online university. In 2008, after seven years in private sector and non-profit project management, Nana spent a year consulting for local and foreign startups in Ghana. Most recently, Nana has contributed camera work, video editing, and sound editing on several multimedia projects for the American Psychological Association, where she works as media consultant/program manager for grant-funded initiatives.

In 2010, Nana was inspired to merge her business experience with her musical roots. With a goal of establishing a non-profit interdisciplinary arts center for youth in Ghana, she enrolled in the Art Institute of Washington’s Media Arts/ Audio Production program, from which she graduated with honors in 2014.

Today, Nana is a multifaceted audio engineer. She writes, records, and mixes songs in collaboration with local artists; composes film soundtracks; works as a location sound mixer/recordist on documentary and scripted films; is a member of ArtSpace Herndon’s Performing Arts Committee; and volunteers with the audio team at Seneca Creek Community Church, where she continues to develop her live sound engineering skills. She is also an avid writer of poetry and prose. In her free time, Nana enjoys spending time with family and friends, biking, walking scenic trails, visiting art galleries, and concert-going.
